MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% compared to the same period in 2025, reaching a total of 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours by August 2026. During the first eight months of 2025, the figure was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth across several governorates. This rise contributed an additional approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national total in the first eight months. In August alone, electricity production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the highest surge, with total electricity output increasing by 204.8% from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with an increase of 44.1%, while Al Wusta saw an 8.4% rise. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.5%. Dhofar also saw growth, with electricity output rising 4.6% from January to August. The data reflected expansion in most regions covered by the national statistics.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity generation. Musandam recorded 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional figures revealed significant variation in electricity growth across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary. The data represent electricity output up to the end of August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity production grew by 4.6% through August, totaling 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period of 2025. This measure accounts for regional purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led with an increase of 204.4% in net production. Al Dakhiliyah rose by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar registered gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output increased by roughly 1,592.1 GWh year on year.
Net electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.4% from the previous year. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6% in net production. Musandam recorded 368.0 GWh of net electricity, with no significant change from the previous year. The regional data mostly followed the trend seen in total electricity generation, and national net output remained higher than the level recorded in the first eight months of 2025.
Water production declines across Oman
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, production was approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% reduction, with output dropping to around 128.07 million cubic metres from roughly 136.57 million. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decline, producing about 149.90 million cubic metres compared to 155.19 million during the same months in 2025.
Dhofar stood out as the primary exception to the national downward trend in water production. The governorate’s output increased by 3.4%, reaching approximately 52.68 million cubic metres from about 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest utility data thus reveal differing national trends for electricity and water in the first eight months of 2026. While electricity generation grew at both total and net levels, overall water production remained below the levels recorded during the same period in 2025.
