An international team of researchers found that extreme heat, rather than just diminished rainfall, is the main driver behind these unprecedented dry spells. The region faces dwindling river systems, enforced water restrictions, and widespread wildfires following record-breaking temperatures in June. This recent study demonstrates that a warming atmosphere accelerates evaporation from lakes, rivers, and soils, contributing to the crisis. Despite below-average precipitation this spring, the temperature increases caused by human activity ultimately turned a normal dry period into a critical emergency.

    Scientists link global warming to intense European drought

    The study, published by the World Weather Attribution group, details how rising temperatures deplete natural water sources. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is not primarily driven by a lack of rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that causes more moisture deficits on land. This dynamic means that the risk of drought continues to grow even where rainfall patterns have not changed significantly. Scientists explain that for each 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor grows by about seven percent. This heightened capacity directly leads to increased evaporation of water from soil and vegetation, intensifying drought conditions across the landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and advanced modeling techniques, researchers quantified the shifted likelihood of such drought events by comparing today’s hotter climate to a scenario 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their findings reveal that soils in western Europe are five times more likely to be extremely dry now than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the same moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The analysis also showed that the very high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe was approximately 80 times more likely. As a result, rainfall shortages that previously would not have caused severe drought are now leading to much drier soils.

    Effects of Intense Heat on Soil Moisture Levels

    Dominik Schumacher of ETH Zurich highlighted the early signs of abnormal soil drying evident in spring, even before summer starts. He explained that rising temperatures rapidly increase the atmosphere’s thirst, drawing vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of a relatively wet beginning to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large-scale wildfires. The accelerated drying process prepared the land for ignition, contributing to severe fires across multiple nations. The findings confirm that climate change-driven drought in europe is shifting weather patterns into increasingly dangerous and unpredictable cycles.

    The agricultural sector is experiencing unprecedented pressure from widespread soil moisture loss. Drought conditions are severely impacting farming communities, leading to historic crop failures across several countries. France is projected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signifying a significant disruption in local food supplies. Meanwhile, Romania’s loss of over one million hectares of maize further threatens regional food security. These domestic deficits, coupled with ongoing global conflicts, risk raising food prices and disproportionately impacting low-income populations.

    Drought and Low Rainfall Dilemmas are Worsened by Heat

    The hydrological impacts deepen the economic toll, as unusually low river levels disrupt vital transport networks. Major shipping disruptions on key waterways underscore the growing severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced flows in major rivers threaten energy production, especially in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Many countries have already imposed emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve dwindling supplies.

    Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions could become even more common. Experts emphasize that these extreme evaporative events are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. If global emissions lead to a temperature increase of 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative conditions could double. Without urgent and substantial emission reductions, experts warn that Europe faces a future of prolonged, intensely dry, and scorching summers.
