By mid-2026, Germany reports nearly 10,000 fatalities linked to heat exposure

    July 31, 2026

Berlin, Germany / RankWire.AI / – During the first seven months of 2026, Germany has documented an estimated 9,800 deaths associated with extreme heat, marking the highest summer mortality rate since systematic records began in 2016. Data published by the Robert Koch Institute reveals that prolonged elevated temperatures from early April through July 19 contributed to this spike. Operating under the Federal Ministry of Health, the federal agency noted that the total number for 2026 has already surpassed the annual death counts of any year over the past decade.

Nearly 10000 heat related deaths confirmed in Germany
Epidemiologists evaluate heat stress impacts on vulnerable demographics in municipal areas.

This increase in deaths was mainly driven by a severe nationwide heatwave during late June, when multiple German states experienced temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius repeatedly. Surveillance models created by public health epidemiologists estimate that more than 5,000 fatalities can be directly linked to this intense weather event. Data shows approximately 810 heat-related deaths occurred from early April until June 21, with a sharp rise of 4,310 deaths from June 22 to June 28. On June 27, the German Weather Service recorded that 46 weather stations registered temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

Throughout July, mortality figures remained high as persistent heat affected central and western Europe. Epidemiological estimates from RKI indicate that 7,900 heat-related deaths took place between early April and July 12. An additional 1,900 fatalities were noted during the surveillance week from July 13 to July 19, bringing the overall count to 9,800. When compared to previous years, these figures surpass the 8,900 heat-related deaths recorded in 2018, with the current total significantly exceeding the typical annual average of about 2,900 deaths from heat between 2023 and 2025.

Record-Breaking Heatwave Mortality Reported by Public Health Authorities

Demographic data analyzed by federal health experts shows that senior citizens suffered the highest health risks amid the extended heatwaves. Of the roughly 9,800 total deaths, around 7,880 occurred in individuals aged 75 and older, accounting for most of the fatalities. Breakdown by age brackets indicates approximately 2,950 deaths among those aged 85 and above, 1,320 among 75 to 84, about 550 between 65 and 74, and roughly 300 deaths among residents under 65. The report also notes a higher mortality among women than men, influenced by demographic proportions.

Experts at the institute emphasize that official death certificates rarely list extreme heat as the sole cause. Instead, prolonged high temperatures tend to worsen existing chronic health conditions, significantly raising the risk of fatal cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and metabolic issues. Epidemiologists rely on mortality models that combine death registration data from the Federal Statistical Office with daily meteorological records to estimate excess deaths caused by thermal stress. They point out that higher nighttime temperatures hinder proper cooling, putting vulnerable individuals under severe strain.

Vulnerable Elderly Populations Face Increased Heat-Related Risks

Forecasts from national weather services indicate that intense heat will continue to affect large parts of Germany well into the remainder of summer. Daily maximum temperatures are predicted to stay between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius across extensive regions, with localized peaks reaching 40 degrees Celsius. In response, public health authorities and local health departments have issued ongoing heat advisories, urging care facilities, healthcare providers, and families to closely monitor elderly residents, ensure adequate indoor cooling, and promote hydration during the hottest hours.

This data release highlights the increasing challenge public health faces with recurring extreme weather events across central Europe. Health systems and municipal authorities are actively updating emergency heat action plans. As surveillance continues through the rest of the season, nearly 10,000 heat-related deaths reported in Germany serve as vital baseline data for federal health planners, environmental agencies, and emergency responders. Monitoring is expected to remain in effect through September, with officials evaluating structural measures and urban cooling strategies to better protect vulnerable groups from heat risks in future years.
