On March 13, Eastern Washington Wildfires Result in 67,000 Evacuations

    August 4, 2026

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – Near Spokane, three wildfires have led to the destruction of no less than 700 structures, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders to approximately 67,000 residents. Since Saturday, the Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview fires have consumed over 8,000 acres. As of Monday night, officials reported no fatalities or serious injuries. Over 1,000 firefighters remain engaged in firefighting efforts and safeguarding neighborhoods within Spokane County. Fire management teams classified the incident cluster among the nation’s most urgent wildfire responses.

Spokane wildfires force mass evacuations as crews defend homes and public infrastructure.

Driven by gusty winds and arid vegetation, the wildfires in eastern Washington advanced from open land into populated zones on Spokane’s northern perimeter. The Old Trails Fire crossed the Spokane River and quickly reached neighborhoods in the northwest within hours of igniting. Flames have destroyed homes, businesses, vehicles, and utility infrastructure across multiple communities. Infrared imaging indicated potential damage to hundreds of additional structures, though officials have yet to confirm these losses. Smoke from the fires has spread across Spokane, impairing visibility near active fire zones.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci on suspicion of first-degree arson on Monday. Authorities connected the arrest solely to the Old Trails Fire, which began near Old Trails Road and Euclid Avenue. A court will determine the specific charge, and the suspicion does not imply guilt. Investigations into the origins of the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires are ongoing. No additional arrests related to the Spokane-area wildfires have been reported by officials.

Spokane County sees expanding evacuation zones

Large sections of northern and northwestern Spokane, along with nearby communities throughout the county, have been placed under evacuation orders. In response to the growing emergency, officials evacuated patients from the Mann-Grandstaff Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Spokane has also opened its convention center to shelter displaced residents and their pets. Community organizations have provided food, water, and essential supplies. Local agencies coordinated emergency child care, road closures, and public information efforts to assist affected families.

In reaction to the wildfire threat, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and activated the National Guard to support firefighting efforts as fires spread across eastern Washington. This declaration facilitated the coordination of personnel, equipment, and emergency response across various counties. A burn ban remains in effect statewide due to the ongoing severe heat and drought conditions. Multiple agencies and external firefighting teams have been mobilized to combat the fires, with federal assistance requested as firefighting resources are heavily engaged across the Pacific Northwest.

Fire crews work to safeguard homes and vital infrastructure

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has joined local and federal teams in managing the Spokane Complex fires. Aircraft have been dropping retardant, while ground crews utilize engines, hand lines, and heavy machinery near threatened residences. Efforts have also focused on protecting roads, transmission lines, hospitals, and water facilities. As of Monday, fire managers reported no containment around the three fires in Spokane County. Road and park closures, including restrictions at Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks, remain in effect.

Power systems suffered damage, leaving thousands of customers without electricity during the initial phase of the emergency. Utility crews have been restoring service where feasible, while emergency teams keep dangerous areas cordoned off. Officials have urged residents to adhere to evacuation notices and to avoid flying drones near firefighting aircraft. Updated maps and alerts are maintained by emergency managers as fire boundaries shift. Damage assessment teams continue surveying burned neighborhoods and confirming property losses before releasing comprehensive figures.
