On the 81st Anniversary, Hiroshima Reiterates Its Call to End Nuclear Weapons

    August 7, 2026

HIROSHIMA, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – Commemorating the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima renewed its appeal for global nuclear disarmament on Thursday. Mayor Kazumi Matsui presided over the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony held at Peace Memorial Park. Participants, including survivors, family members, Japanese officials, and international delegates, gathered near the Atomic Bomb Dome. At precisely 8:15 a.m., a bell rang out to mark the moment the bomb detonated on August 6, 1945. Following this, attendees observed a minute of silence to honor those who lost their lives.

Hiroshima renews nuclear abolition call on 81st anniversary
Hiroshima marks 81 years since the atomic bombing with renewed calls for nuclear abolition.

During the city’s Peace Declaration, Matsui urged national leaders to reduce reliance on nuclear deterrence. He emphasized the importance of confronting the human toll of atomic warfare and called on nuclear-armed nations to take responsibility. Additionally, Matsui invited political figures to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and hear firsthand accounts from hibakusha, survivors whose stories remain central to Hiroshima’s annual remembrance. For decades, the city has used this ceremony each August 6 to advocate for nuclear abolition and to keep the memory of the bombing alive.

This year’s memorial drew approximately 50,000 attendees. Representatives from 121 countries and regions participated, along with the European Union. For the first time since assuming leadership, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended, stating that Japan would pursue a pragmatic approach toward a future where nuclear weapons are never used. She highlighted the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a pivotal framework in this effort, while also referencing Japan’s three non-nuclear principles.

Nuclear arms diplomacy faces mounting challenges

Less than three months after the conclusion of the 2026 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference without a consensus document, Hiroshima underscored the event’s outcome in its appeal for enhanced disarmament initiatives. The conference marked the third consecutive NPT review to end without agreement. While Japan continues to endorse the NPT framework, it has not signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and depends on extended nuclear deterrence through its alliance with the United States.

Addressing the anniversary, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a message read by UN disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu. Guterres pointed to increasing geopolitical divisions, rising mistrust, and mounting pressure on international arms control efforts. He warned that the decades-long decline in global nuclear arsenals has begun to reverse. The United Nations urged nations to prioritize diplomacy, dialogue, adherence to international law, and multilateral cooperation in addressing renewed nuclear threats and working toward disarmament.

    Survivors’ testimonies deepen Hiroshima memorial

Official figures recognize 91,105 atomic bomb survivors in Japan, with their average age now exceeding 86. As the number of hibakusha diminishes, efforts to document and preserve their personal stories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki intensify. Survivors have detailed the destruction caused by the blast, fires, radiation exposure, and long-term health issues faced by subsequent generations. Many have also actively campaigned for nuclear disarmament. Children representing Hiroshima participated in Thursday’s ceremony, reaffirming a commitment to peace. The city continues to safeguard survivor memories through museums, educational initiatives, and memorial activities.

By the end of 1945, approximately 140,000 people had died from the Hiroshima bombing. Three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, resulting in around 70,000 deaths by year’s end. Japan announced its surrender on August 15, bringing World War II to an end. Hiroshima subsequently established Peace Memorial Park as a site for remembrance and peace education. On this 81st anniversary, the city reiterated its message of nuclear abolition and the enduring human consequences of atomic warfare.
