Indonesia’s B50 Biodiesel Mandate to Save $10.8 Billion in 2026

    July 20, 2026

JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – The mandatory B50 biodiesel program in Indonesia is projected to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, equivalent to US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This forecast accounts for reduced spending on imported diesel resulting from the country’s increased biodiesel blend. The policy mandates that all diesel sold across the nation contain 50% palm oil-based biodiesel. Officials stated that this initiative promotes greater domestic fuel consumption while decreasing reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia started the nationwide B50 rollout on July 1 and officially launched the requirement on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. The new blend replaces B40, which incorporated 40% biodiesel and became the standard in 2025. B50 is composed of equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, also known as FAME, and conventional diesel. The renewable component is supplied by palm oil, tying the fuel program to Indonesia’s local plantation and processing sectors.

The ministry compared the estimated Rp170 trillion savings with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings under the B40 standard. It also anticipates that B50 will decrease fossil diesel consumption by roughly 4 million kilolitres. The government tasked state-owned Pertamina with managing the blending process and supporting distribution across the national fuel infrastructure. Fuel suppliers are allowed to utilize remaining B40 stocks until September as the transition to the higher blend is completed.

B50 Policy Promotes Greater Use of Palm-Based Fuel

Indonesia projects that B50 demand will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. The initiative will also involve an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 program for 2026. The increased mandate directs a larger proportion of domestically produced palm oil toward transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, rail systems, and electricity generation.

Official estimates suggest the program will generate an added value of 23.49 trillion rupiah for the crude palm oil sector. Additionally, the government claims B50 could support around 2.1 million jobs spanning agriculture, processing, logistics, and fuel supply chains. The ministry also estimates that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes with B40.

Pre-Implementation Testing Ensures Smooth Diesel Transition

Prior to the official launch, the government conducted tests of B50 in various vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, mining machinery, agricultural tools, trains, ships, and power plants. Automotive testing involved light vehicles covering over 50,000 kilometres and heavy vehicles over 40,000 kilometres. Mining equipment was tested for about 1,000 operational hours, with no significant engine issues linked to fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel conformed to government standards and the technical specifications of vehicle manufacturers.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel mandate over nearly twenty years. Starting with B2.5 in 2008, followed by B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, then B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025, the country has steadily advanced to B50 this year. Each escalation has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, production capabilities, storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure to ensure nationwide implementation.
