U.S. Markets Climb on Thursday Following Extended Debt Repurchase Measures by Treasury

    August 20, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, U.S. equities experienced slight gains as yields on long-term Treasury bonds dropped significantly. The S&P 500 increased by 16.22 points, or 0.21%, to reach 7,707.98, halting a streak of three consecutive declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 119.65 points, or 0.22%, closing at 53,463.05. The Nasdaq Composite added 41.38 points, or 0.16%, ending the day at 26,331.09. The decline in government bond yields helped major indices recover after several sessions of downward pressure caused by rising borrowing costs.

Wall Street rises after Treasury expands debt buybacks
Wall Street closed higher as Treasury yields fell and healthcare stocks rallied.

Following the U.S. Treasury Department’s announcement of expanded liquidity support buybacks for longer-term government debt, bond prices increased. Beginning September 9, the maximum purchase size will be raised from $2 billion to a minimum of $4 billion per operation. This adjustment affects nominal coupon securities within the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year maturity ranges. The larger buyback volumes will remain in effect through November 4. The department indicated that high-quality offer volumes supported the decision to increase liquidity operations in these sectors.

Bond yields responded to the news by moving lower, reversing some of the recent rise in long-term borrowing costs. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped to roughly 4.65%, while the 30-year yield declined to around 5.20%. On Tuesday, the 30-year yield had reached 5.337%, marking its highest level since 2007. Since bond prices move inversely to yields, increased demand for government debt drove yields downward. This retreat alleviated some of the pressure that had accompanied the recent selloff in longer-dated bonds.

    Healthcare Sector Bolsters Market Performance

During Wednesday’s session, healthcare stocks contributed further support, with several pharmaceutical companies posting significant gains. Moderna shares soared by 177%, and Merck increased by 12.6% following the announcement of positive results from a Phase 3 melanoma trial. The INTerpath-001 study evaluated personalized mRNA therapy intismeran autogene combined with Keytruda after surgical removal of high-risk melanoma. The trial achieved its primary endpoint for recurrence-free survival and also met a key secondary endpoint measuring survival without distant cancer spread.

This rally in healthcare equities helped offset mixed trading in other sectors, particularly within technology. Consumer stocks also contributed as multiple major firms released quarterly earnings during the session. Estée Lauder rose over 16% after its earnings report, adding momentum to the consumer stocks. Target and Lowe’s also gained following their financial disclosures. Smaller-cap stocks outperformed their larger counterparts, with the Russell 2000 increasing about 0.5% as the broader market recovered.

    Indices End Three-Day Losing Streak

Wednesday’s gains marked the end of a three-session decline for the Nasdaq, the Dow, and the S&P 500. The rebound followed earlier losses driven by rising long-term yields earlier in the week. Despite the Wednesday rise, the main indexes remained lower for the week at close. The S&P 500 was about 1% below last Friday’s level. The Dow had fallen roughly 0.5% this week, while the Nasdaq was down approximately 1.5%.

Despite the weekly setbacks and recent bond market pressures, the broader 2026 outlook remained positive. As of Wednesday’s close, the S&P 500 was up about 12.6% since the beginning of the year. The Dow had gained approximately 11.2%, and the Nasdaq led with a roughly 13.3% increase, reflecting its stronger year-to-date performance. Wednesday’s session therefore represented a modest recovery for Wall Street, with falling Treasury yields and healthcare sector gains lifting all three major U.S. stock indexes.
