Record $14.33 Billion Increase in South Korea’s Reserves in August

    September 4, 2026

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – In August, South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves experienced their largest monthly growth ever, reaching a total of $442.28 billion by the end of the month, according to the Bank of Korea. This marks a $14.33 billion rise from the $427.95 billion recorded at the close of July. The monthly increase is the most significant since the data series began in 1971 and also represents the highest level since May 2022.

South Korea reserves climb record $14.33 billion in August
South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves reached $442.28 billion at the end of August.

This boost in August continues a three-month recovery trend in South Korea’s foreign reserves, following increases of $370 million in June and $590 million in July. The August gain significantly exceeded these figures and even surpassed the previous record monthly rise of $14.29 billion, set in May 2009. Despite this substantial jump, reserves still remain below the peak of $469.21 billion documented in October 2021.

The Bank of Korea attributed the rise to multiple quantifiable factors during August. Financial institutions increased their foreign currency deposits, and returns on reserve assets contributed to the total. Currency fluctuations also played a role by elevating the dollar value of assets held in other currencies. Because the Bank measures reserves in U.S. dollars, exchange rate shifts can influence their reported value without affecting the actual quantity of foreign assets.

Foreign securities stay as the primary component of reserves

By the end of August, foreign securities made up the majority of South Korea’s foreign exchange reserves, with their value increasing by $7.07 billion from July to $387.07 billion. This accounted for 87.5% of the nation’s total reserve holdings, encompassing government and corporate securities kept as reserve assets. Foreign currency deposits saw another sizable increase, climbing by $7.17 billion during August to reach $30.30 billion by month’s end.

Special drawing rights expanded by $60 million to $15.77 billion in August. South Korea’s reserve position stood at approximately $4.34 billion, and gold holdings remained steady at $4.79 billion. The composition indicates that securities continue to be the dominant asset in the reserve portfolio, despite the notable growth in deposits. The combined rise in securities and foreign currency deposits was responsible for nearly all of the $14.33 billion monthly increase in the country’s official foreign reserves.

Reserves reach four-year high following August growth

With a total of $442.28 billion, the reserves hit their highest level in over four years. South Korea last reported a higher total in May 2022, when reserves stood at $447.71 billion. The latest figures also bring the country closer to pre-decline levels seen after the October 2021 peak. Official foreign reserves include securities, deposits, gold, special drawing rights, and the nation’s reserve position within the international monetary system.

Foreign exchange reserves serve as official assets in foreign currency that support international payments and external financial obligations. Monthly reporting provides markets with a consistent gauge of South Korea’s reserve status. August’s data highlights both a record monthly increase and the highest overall balance since May 2022. This marks a significant change from the smaller reserve gains in June and July, though the total still remains below South Korea’s historical maximum.
